How to Apply!


This is where to apply online for a residential (only) mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and reroof permit. Residential permits that do not require plan review may be applied and paid for, with your MasterCard or VISA, online here. (See “How to Apply” for more information)

My Permits allows you to track your permits so you don't have to search for them each time you use Citizens Connect. You must have an account before you can select any Permits to track.

Who can apply?

You must be either the property owner, an agent of the owner, or a Washington State licensed contractor.  In the case of an electrical permit the licensed contractor must be a licensed electrical contractor.

Types of permits available to be applied for online

Only residential, single-family, two-family dwellings and townhouse permits which are listed below are available online. These would include new construction, remodel, addition and repair or replacement. All other permits must be applied for at the Building Department.

  4. Re-roof

All work is subject to field inspections by the City of Des Moines inspectors.

How to apply online for a permit

  1. First time users must create an online account before you can log-in. (see the link to register at the top of the page)
  2. Log-in and follow the prompts to fill in the required information on the application.
  3. Use your MasterCard or Visa to process and provide payment.
  4. Submit your application (this emails the application to City staff for a quick review).
  5. Watch for a return email letting you know that your application has been approved.
  6. Print a copy of your permit to have onsite and available for inspections.
